As the biggest of the cluster of Spanish Canary Islands located in the Atlantic Ocean, Tenerife is famed for its tourist resorts and summery climate. The island is marked by its huge volcano, El Teide, which is still known to be active and sees minor earthquakes every few years. Tenerife's major attraction is its beautiful beaches, of which it has many - although in the high summer the island can become swamped with visitors, the beaches are generally good all year round. Some of the beaches have black volcanic sand (such as Las Americas) whilst others have imported yellow sand (Los Cristianos). The Lolo Parque Zoo near Puerto de la Cruz is popular, as are the whale cruises from Las Americas, the Aqua Park and the many museums and galleries in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The Veronicas strip near Playa de las Americas is famed for its nightlife.
Due to Tenerife's status as a major tourist destination, transportation options for getting to the island are varied. There are two main ferry ports on the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife (with services to Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, Morrojabe, Cediz and La Palma) and Los Cristianos in the south-east (with services to La Palma, La Gomera and Valverde). The two airports on the island, Tenerife North and Reina Sofia, see a huge amount of flights each year (particularly in summer) from carriers such as bmi, easyJet, Air Malta, First Choice Airways, Ryanair and XL Airways. Tenerife is an easy island to explore by car, with car hire companies such as Auto Reisen, Cicar and Europcar in operation. |
